A Simple Path to Starting Prison Ministry with Lifeline

John Walton

As spring awakens fresh beginnings, it’s also a powerful time for action, especially for those called to ministry within jails and prisons. Across the U.S., including right here in Wichita, KS, many facilities lack access to godly parenting programs that can help break cycles of incarceration for families.

That’s where Malachi Dads and Hannah’s Gift come in: faith-based discipleship journeys that equip incarcerated parents to grow spiritually, reconcile with their families, and lead with love.

At Lifeline Global Ministries, our mission is to empower partners to take these proven programs into local facilities. With a strong and growing focus on ministry in the U.S., we’re eager to walk alongside churches, volunteers, and chaplains ready to bring Gospel transformation behind the walls. If you’ve felt nudged to serve in this space but aren’t sure where to start, this guide is for you. Launching a program may be simpler than you think, and the eternal impact is profound.

5 Steps to Launching a Lifeline Program in Your Community

Start with Prayer and Discernment
Ask God for clarity and guidance. Is this the right time and place? Do you have the heart and commitment to serve incarcerated parents? Invite others to pray with you for wisdom and direction.

Connect with Facility Chaplains
Every successful program begins with relationships. Reach out to your local jail or prison chaplain. Lifeline can provide helpful language, resources, and program overviews to share with them, showing how these initiatives align with facility goals for rehabilitation and family restoration.

Train Your Leadership Team
Lifeline offers a detailed Leader’s Guide to walk you through roles, responsibilities, and facilitation tips. Whether you’re forming a team from your church, small group, or community network, strong preparation builds long-term impact.

Access the Curriculum
Both Malachi Dads (for fathers) and Hannah’s Gift (for mothers) are available through our Curriculum Center. The materials are Gospel-centered, easy to follow, and designed for group study inside correctional facilities.

Recruit Volunteers and Sustain the Mission
Invite others to be part of the work—discussion leaders, prayer partners, donors. Churches can support financially or by providing transportation, materials, or hosting training. Encourage ongoing support to keep the ministry vibrant and expanding.

Each program speaks to the unique challenges and roles of mothers and fathers behind bars. Malachi Dads centers on biblical manhood, responsibility, and legacy. Hannah’s Gift helps women walk in healing, identity, and maternal calling. Together, they bring hope to generations.

What If It’s Hard?

Some volunteers face delays or rejections when first proposing a program. That’s normal. Facility approvals can take time, but perseverance matters. The National Institute of Corrections and related corrections resources highlight the important role trained volunteers play in offering structured, values-based programming that supports rehabilitation and reentry. In the Wichita area and beyond, teams have found success by first offering small pilot groups and building trust through consistency and compassion. Your steady presence could be the start of something life-changing.

The Gospel transforms lives, and Malachi Dads and Hannah’s Gift are powerful tools in that mission. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. You just need a willing heart, a bit of training, and the faith to take the first step. This March, consider turning interest into action by launching a program in your community. You can also support those doing this work through prayer or giving. Donate here to help more families experience restoration through Christ.
